THE STUDIO
I love what I do. For me, the process of making things is immersive. I get excited about details. I want to do everything myself, so I can control the outcome, but also, why not? Life is short. I connect with what I am making, I visualize in my mind, I push until it's right.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I build engaging works of art that invite viewers in. The pieces are a part of their environment and a response to it. I research the history and community of the site as well as its landscape and architecture to generate innovative ideas that serve a purpose. Once I arrive at a concept, I use form, material language and scale to create artwork that celebrates and encourages discovery.
Successful public art requires a combination of inspiration and knowledge. I know how to communicate and collaborate with city officials and project partners. As a public artist with two decades of experience creating large scale metal sculptures nationally, I engineer and build robust and durable work with a no-nonsense approach.
COLLABORATION WITH BETH
In 2009 Beth Galston approached me to help her build the Serpentine Fence in Jamaica Plain. We accomplished what many said could not be done. We had so much fun we decided to apply for projects as a team. We still work together to this day! Beth spearheads the concepts and I help design and build them. I have learned so much from Beth. She is a mentor, a teacher and a friend. Over the years our process has become more and more collaborative, and I have begun to work on my own public art projects. Beth and I have worked together on the Serpentine Fence (Jamaica Plain, MA), Sound Wave (Nashville, TN), and Prairie Grass (San Antonio, TX). Currently we are working on a public art project at Gilman Station on the Green Line Extension (Somerville, MA).
